TSC Reveals New Training Subjects Ahead of CBC Roll Out In Junior, Senior Secondary School

Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has identified new training areas that colleges and universities will train propspective secondary school teachers in preparation for the implementation of Compentence Based Curriculum Junior and Senior secondary schools.

Through an advisory to the ministry of education, TSC boss said the programmes are will impart requisite skills required to see to it that the roll out of the CBC in junior and senior schools in 2023.

According to the teachers’ employer, new learning areas that teacher training institutions need to give speacial attention include; Pretechnical and Prevocational education, life skills, Agriculture and Health education.

Indingenous languages, Kenya sign languages, Visual and Performing Arts.

In addition, the commmission identified various subjects where skill gaps exist such as Leatherwork, Mandarin, Woodwork Technology, Plumbing and Ceramics.

In a bid to facilitate learning in Health Education, TSC has also noted that teachers be retooled in Home Science, Physical Education and Biology. For social studies content on citizenship should be included.

TSC Boss Dr. Nancy Macharia further indicated that teachers’ education curriculum should be designed in such a manner that secondary school tutors teach and instruct a number of subjects. Presently, teachers in secondary school instruct two subjects only.

“We recommend and advise that the teacher education programme should be flexible and aligned to enable one to teach and instruct a variety of subjects,” said TSC boss Dr. Nancy Macharia.
