In this article, you will get to know how the new housing levy will eat into the salaries of teachers.
Currently the highest paid teachers are chief principals who take home basic salary of between Sh131,380 and Sh157,656 per month.
The lowest paid teachers are PRIMARY TEACHER II. These are teachers at Grade B5 (T- Scale 5) and the pocket monthly salary of between ksh 21,756 and ksh 27,195.
With the new house levy, only employees will make a 1.5 per cent contribution of their monthly gross pay while employers will pay nothing.
It is important to note that employers who fail to remit employees’ housing levy contributions will be fined two percent of the unpaid funds every month.
The employer will be required to remit the deduction not later than nine working days after month end.
The levy is intended to finance the government’s ambitious plan to construct 250,000 affordable housing units every year.
