Council of Legal Education Approves 17 Universities To Offer Law Courses

The Council of Legal Education has released a roster of accredited universities offering law courses in Kenya, encompassing those awaiting approval.

In a Gazette Notice issued on Friday, the council disclosed that four institutions, including Strathmore Law School (valid until November 19, 2024) and Mount Kenya University (MKU) School of Law (license expiring on March 23, 2026), received approval for the Masters in Law program.

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa Faculty of Law and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) School of Law are scheduled for review on June 20, 2028.

Additionally, 17 institutions have been sanctioned to provide the Bachelor of Laws degree program.

These institutions encompass

Daystar University School of Law at Valley Road Campus, MKU School of Law at Parklands Campus, University of Nairobi Faculty of Law at Kisumu Campus, Kisii University School of Law, University of Embu School of Law, and Umma University School of Law.

Additionally, there are Africa Nazarene University School of Law, Chuka University Faculty of Law, Moi University School of Law, Uon Faculty of Law at Parklands Campus, and Egerton University Faculty of Law.

The list further includes Kabarak University School of Law, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law, Strathmore Law School, Maseno University School of Law, and South Eastern University.

Furthermore, four universities have been granted approval to offer a Diploma in Law: MKU School of Law at Parklands Campus, Kisii University School of Law, Kenya Institute of Management, and CUEA Faculty of Law.

Pending Approval

Daystar University School of Law has fulfilled its application for the renewal of licenses to provide a Bachelor of Laws, with the Council’s inspection conducted on October 19, 2023, awaiting approval.

Similarly, MKU School of Law, Parklands Campus, is in the pending approval stage for both Bachelor of Laws and Diploma in Law.

The Council is still reviewing Kenya School of Law’s proposal to offer a Diploma in Law (Para Legal Studies) following an inspection on November 1, 2023.

Assessment for license renewal is ongoing for both Riara Law School and Kenyatta University School of Law for their Bachelor of Laws programs.
