2022 Grade 6 Agriculture Project Rearing Of Domestic Animals

 

REARING OF DOMESTIC ANIMALS

  1. The teacher(s) will guide the learners to carefully read through the performance task, perform the task and maintain evidence.
  2. The teacher(s) will use the Assessment guide provided to assess the learner’s work.
  3. Samples of work that show the learner’s progress and performance on the tasks should be maintained as evidence in the learner’s portfolio.
  4. Samples of work selected for evidence should aim at demonstrating the learner’s progress and achievement on the different stages of project implementation.
  5. Implementation of the project chosen should be completed by 16th September 2022.
  6. The marks awarded for the performance level demonstrated should be recorded on the score sheet provided.

PERFORMANCE TASK

Each school should select only one type of domestic animals from the following:

    1. Chicken – (two per group)
    2. Rabbits – (two per group)
    3. Guinea pigs – (two per group

In groups of 4-6, learners to rear selected domestic animals in second term 2022.

Individually learners should use textbooks, magazines, digital devices, guided internet, resource persons, parents /guardians to search for information and write notes on rearing of the domestic animals selected.

In turns, learners should use their notes to present to the group on how the domestic animals can be reared. The presentation should be video recorded by one of the group members. The group member recording the video should be replaced when it is his or her turn to contribute. The video should be 15-20 minutes long (about 3 minutes per group member).

The group members should then discuss and prepare group notes on rearing the selected domestic animals.

In turns, group members to discuss and agree on how to source or acquire the selected domestic animals. The discussion should be video recorded by one of the group members. The group member recording the video should be replaced when it is his or her turn to contribute. The video should be 15-20 minutes long (about 3 minutes per group member).

The group should identify the rearing practices, share responsibilities and prepare a duty roster on routine management practices to be carried out to ensure every group member participates. The assigned duties should be rotational to provide all the group members an opportunity to carry out all the practices.

  1. The group should then rear the domestic animals in second term 2022.
  2. Records of the activities carried out should be maintained.
  3. Maintain an electronic portfolio as evidence on the progress and achievement made on the project.
  1. This project should be carried out in second term 2022 and should be concluded by 16th September 2022. Thereafter, the school should decide and arrange on how best to continue rearing the domestic animals or dispose of them.
  2. The schools should provide learners with the following facilities:

(a) Housing structures

Each group should be provided with an appropriate housing structure for the type of domestic animals selected. The housing structure should be made by the school. The dimensions of the housing structure should be appropriate to the class of domestic animals selected. It is important to ensure the following:

  •  Proper ventilation and lighting. (ii)    The roof should be waterproof.
  • The floor of the housing structure may be weld mesh, slatted timber, earthen or concrete.
  • Housing structures may be singly or in several units attached horizontally. The chicken/rabbit houses may be placed on top of each other up to a maximum of three tiers.
  • Housing structures can be placed indoors or outdoors depending on design and security arrangements.
  • Each house should be lockable.

Note: Using locally available materials, the school can involve the learners in the construction of the housing structure.

Each group should

  • Write their names and assessment numbers on the housing structure.
  • Equip the house with a feeder and waterer. This can be improvised from locally available materials such as old water buckets, bowls, tyres, etc.
  • Equip the house with a record keeping card.
  • Creatively make other preparation on the house to make it ready for rearing the domestic animals.

 (b)  Domestic animals

The learners should be provided with the domestic animals by Monday, the third week of second term 2022.

NOTE:

The domestic animals can be acquired by buying or borrowing from home (to be returned after the rearing period).

 c) Means of weighing or estimating growth of the animals

The school should provide appropriate means of weighing or estimating growth of the animals over time. This can be done by weighing or measuring the animal’s length or height.

(d) Feeds

This can include purchased, locally mixed or collected feeding materials. Where applicable the animals can also be released at specified time to forage under the learners’ observation.

  1. After the learners have been provided with the above facilities, they should be instructed to:
    1. Weigh or measure the domestic animals and record the weight/length/height on a record card on monthly basis. The record card should be hanged in the housing structure.
    2. rear the domestic animals in second term 2022.
    3. keep records of the activities carried out and observations made during the rearing period.
    4. Maintain an electronic portfolio as evidence of progress and achievement on the project.
  • The agriculture teacher should assess learners’ projects using the scoring guide provided by KNEC.
  • The marks awarded to the group should be recorded for each learner in the appropriate column of the assessment sheet. Ensure that these scores are entered according to learners’ assessment numbers in ascending order.
  1. Each learner’s score should be uploaded on the KNEC Portal by 16th September 2022.
  2. The project should be concluded by 16th September 2022.
