Hola Boys Secondary School is a Boys Day & Boarding school, located in Tana River County. The school sits on total acreage of 150 with an enrollment of about 300 students and a teaching staff of approximately 24 teachers. Hola Boys Secondary School is the only national boys’ school in Tana River County, also popularly known as “Hola Barracks” because of its rich history and the fact that many of its former students join the military. The school was started in the year 1957 through a Harambee initiative. The school was started with only 10 students. But it has come a long and now boasts more than 400 students.

The school has portrayed academic improvement over the years but hardly appears in the frontline to compete with other national schools. For example, the school had a mean score of 3.7 in the Kenya Secondary Education Certificate in 2018’s KCSE, which the administration attributes to student indiscipline. Two students scored B minus. Meanwhile, the school has to deal with lack of staff quarters, a shortage of teachers, and inadequate learning materials.

Here, form one admission is usually made by academic merit in the sense of the KCPE exams.The school, for example, invited more than 200 Form Ones with 330 marks and above in last year’s admission. The journey has not been smooth for the county’s leading learning institution because, despite its elevation to a national school status, most of the students invited to join Form One have continued to avoid it over the years.
